Classically trained by Soprano Sally Johnson, Briony was a member of the prestigious Glyndebourne Youth Opera for many years, and performed as a soloist in their productions in Ireland, Holland and on the main Glyndebourne stage.
From the age of eleven Briony was singing with the BBC, performing as a soloist for Children in Need on Southern Counties Radio, but aged seventeen, (whilst studying for her A-Levels), Briony auditioned for BBC1’s ‘How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria’. After three memorable attempts, and some comedic interviews with Graham Norton, Briony became the youngest finalist in the last 20 contestants, and performed for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and other major celebrities at his exclusive Sydmonton Festival.
Although deemed too young and inexperienced at the time to undertake the role, Briony was picked up off the back of the programme, moved to London and launched her career. She performed in the UK tour of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ as Dorothy, Alice Fitzwarren alongside Hollyoaks’ Matt Milburn in ‘Dick Whittington’, and was then given her first major film role in the gritty remake of Paradise Lost, ‘Eden Burning’.
Aged eighteen, Briony decided to return to London to train at The Arts Educational School, completing a BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre. She was fortunate enough to be funded for all three years by the BBC Performing Arts Fund, who televised accounts of her progress, and invited her to sing at major BBC events both at Television Centre in White City, and at The Royal Albert Hall.
On graduating, Briony was taken on by a leading London agent, and since then has worked consistently in theatre, film and recording in England and abroad. She played Dorothy in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at Dorking Halls, Katie in ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ and Luschin in Brecht’s ‘The Mother’ at The Scoop, More London, where she also choreographed the summer season. Following this she was invited to film again with one of the pioneers of 21st Century film-making, Toaster Productions.
In 2011 she was invited to move out to Italy to perform for ACLE in their 2011 National Tour, and she travelled all over the country playing Alice in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with a fantastic team of actors from Britain and the USA. That summer, she was privileged to be invited to Buckingham Palace by Her Majesty the Queen to a reception for young people in the performing arts as the music, drama and dance representative of the British Federation of Festivals.
In the Autumn of 2012, Briony performed as a Singer in The Thursford Christmas Spectacular, before going out to work in New York. On her return, she performed in the London transfer of “Angels in Heels” before being offered a contract to perform with English Musicals Korea, close to the North Korean border. It was an amazing and exciting place, both culturally and politically, and she had a brilliant time working with people from all over the world, and learning Korean!
Whilst in Korea, Briony co-wrote five musicals which were seen by more than ten thousand people. Many of these are still being produced in South Korea and the rights have been bought to some for production in the USA. She also helped raise more than $3,000 for Liberty in North Korea, as part of Birds on the Wire, an independent music group in South Korea specializing in A Capella and acoustic music. They performed both in Seoul and near the DMZ, and made a music video that helped to spread international awareness for the North Korean refugees. She is so proud to be able to contribute her music and time towards this amazing cause.
In 2018, Briony was offered the chance to go back out to work in New York, where she is currently living and working on her music. She is delighted to be working with an amazing group of singers in the South Bronx and a producer in Brooklyn, and is loving life in the Big Apple. Please follow her here, on YouTube and Facebook for updates on performances and recordings! She would like to thank the BBC Performing Arts Fund, and all her friends and family for their continued support.
